Abstract
Local governments play a pivotal role in the socio-economic development of rural areas, particularly in developing countries like Nigeria. This study examines the role of local governments in the transformation of rural areas in Nigeria, focusing on key sectors such as education, healthcare, agriculture, and infrastructure. Utilizing a mixed-method approach, the research draws on data collected from 100 respondents across various rural communities in Riyom Local Government Area, Plateau State. The findings reveal that while local governments have made significant strides in agricultural development and infrastructural projects, there are critical gaps in education and healthcare service delivery. A total of 70% of respondents reported dissatisfaction with the state of educational services, while 75% noted inadequacies in healthcare provisions. Additionally, governance challenges, including corruption and bureaucratic inefficiencies, were identified as major hindrances to effective local government performance. The study concludes that despite some successes, local governments must adopt more transparent, accountable, and community-driven approaches to improve service delivery and foster sustainable rural development. Recommendations include improved resource allocation, enhanced transparency, and greater community participation in local governance. These findings contribute to the broader understanding of local governance and its impact on rural transformation in Nigeria....
