Abstract
Dysmenorrhea is the medical term for pain during menstruation. it is one of the most common reasons why females of reproductive age visit the gynaecological clinic and has serious effects on the social, physical, psychological and biological lifestyle. However, despite it's seeming high prevalence, dysmenorrhea remains a neglected topic reflected in the attitude of even trained medical professionals which has a great impact on the general well-being of the nation at large, since the health care providers are majorly responsible for providing adequate health promotion and this becomes a problem when what is communicated, what is received and what is meant to be received are entirely different. This study therefore assessed the level of knowledge, attitude and practice of coping mechanisms among female nursing students in NAUTH, Nnewi, a tertiary medical facility and future health care providers. A cross cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out among 180 nursing students in NAUTH who are at different level in the school. A semistructured questionnaire was used to collect data. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 25 of the 180 participants, their mean age was 19.18 +/- 14.16 with a high prevalence of dysmenorrhea which stood at 78%. The result showed good knowledge, poor attitude and poor practice of coping mechanisms for dysmenorrhea while factors like source of information, doctor's negligence and anxiety were influential. The participants reported having a negative effect of the pain on their lifestyle. The curriculum of the nursing school should therefore be structured to elaborate the need for effective practice of coping mechanisms for dysmenorrhea while doctors are encouraged to show a positive attitude towards those who present to them. ...
