Abstract
Privacy and confidentiality are vital for establishing effective, respectful clinical relationships. This study assessed health information management (HIM) professionals’ attitudes and perceptions toward patient health information privacy and confidentiality at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH), Awka. The target population comprised 43 HIM professionals in COOUTH’s health records department, also constituting the sample size. Respondents included 5 males and 38 females. Three research questions guided the study. Data obtained were analyzed using simple percentages, and the stated hypothesis was tested via chi-square.   Results reveal HIM professionals collect/document patient information confidentially. However, negative privacy/confidentiality attitudes/perceptions impact patients, including distrust between patients and hospital professionals (30%) patients avoiding treatment (40%) hospital litigation by patients (12.5%) and stigmatization (17.5%).  Proposed solutions include HIM professional training/retraining (20%) staff sensitization to privacy/confidentiality (22.5%) breaches punished (10%) and good records practices observance (37.5%). The tested hypothesis showed HIM attitudes/perceptions significantly impact patients. Recommendations include computerizing health information services to improve privacy and confidentiality. Confidential HIM collection and documentation affirms an effective clinical relationship. However, negative attitudes/perceptions held by one-third of HIM staff lead to patient distrust, avoidance, lawsuits, and stigma - exacerbating poor health outcomes. Proposed solutions emphasize systemic and individual accountability through training, punishment, and technology upgrades. Improving privacy fundamentally honors patient dignity....
