Abstract
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic and associated lockdowns increased the risk of sexual abuse and violence against adolescent girls in Nigeria. This study aimed to assess the reported cases of sexual abuse among adolescents during the pandemic period at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) in Nnewi, Anambra State, Nigeria. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using convenience sampling of case files of 20 sexually abused adolescents aged 10-19 years at NAUTH during the April-June 2020 lockdown. Data on socio-demographics, and details of abuse including location, perpetrator and health/psychological outcomes were extracted and analyzed using SPSS. Findings: Majority (75%) of victims were females aged 11-13 years. Neighbors (30%) and teachers (15%) were the most common perpetrators, with abuse occurring mostly (55%) in perpetrators’ houses in the afternoons. Vaginal (30%) and anal (25%) penetration were the predominant manners of abuse. Most cases (80%) were reported to authorities but no legal action was taken in 65% of cases. Key barriers to reporting abuse were confidentiality concerns and protecting family image. Victims commonly experienced psychological outcomes like depression (15%) and moodiness (15%).   Conclusions: Child sexual abuse was prevalent during the COVID-19 lockdown in Nigeria, with known neighborhood males being common perpetrators. However, legal action against perpetrators was lacking. There is a need for multifaceted awareness campaigns on risks and reporting procedures for sexual abuse, to improve disclosure rates and access to support services for victims in Nigeria. Authorities should strengthen response systems and law enforcement, especially during humanitarian crises like pandemics when children are most vulnerable. ...
