Abstract
Foreign body aspiration is a common problem worldwide, especially amongst young children. It requires a high index of suspicion as it can be misdiagnosed and mistreated leading to various complications and possibly death. To determine the prevalence of foreign body aspiration amongst paediatric patients at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Anambra State, South East, Nigeria. This cross-sectional survey was conducted amongst all paediatric patients who presented to Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi. Data was collected from the records department and results were analyzed using the SPSS version 25.0. A total of 5126 patients were included in this study of which 31 children were managed for foreign body aspiration (prevalence of 0.6%), of which only 24 complete records were successfully retrieved with 13(54.2%) males and 11(42.8%) females. Peak incidence occurs in children between the ages of 1-5 years. Commonly aspirated FBs were groundnut and fish bone. The Foreign bodies (FBs) were commonly lodged in the right (41.7%) and left (29.2%) main bronchi respectively. 41.6% of patients had normal x-ray findings while about 33.3% presented with hyperinflation. 2 patients had emergency tracheostomy following a failed bronchoscopy while 1 patient had a thoracotomy and bronchotomy also following a failed bronchoscopy. All patients eventually had a successful foreign body removal with zero mortality recorded. No significant relationships between the socio-demographics and the foreign body aspirated. CONCLUSION: Groundnuts are a commonly aspirated FB while the right main bronchus is a favorable site or lodgment of FBs. Early presentation to hospital and proper diagnosis is necessary for better clinical outcomes. Parents and guardians should be educated on the topic and the dangers of FBA and the necessary steps to take to curtail it. ...
