Abstract
The presence and clinical significance of sesamoid bones in the lower extremities have been the subject of interest and investigation in the field of radiology and orthopedics. This study aims to evaluate the prevalence of sesamoid bones in lower extremity radiographs and contribute to the existing body of knowledge on this topic. A systematic review of relevant literature was conducted to gather information on the prevalence, location, and variations of sesamoid bones in the lower extremities. Additionally, a cross-sectional study was carried out involving radiographic assessments of a selected population at ATBUTH, Bauchi. The sample size consisted of individuals who had lower extremity radiographs for various reasons. The research design employed in this study was descriptive, utilizing radiographic images and data collection forms. The data collected included demographic information, the presence or absence of sesamoid bones, location, and any associated pathologies or abnormalities. The collected data were analyzed using statistical methods, including descriptive statistics and inferential analysis to determine prevalence rates and potential correlations. Preliminary findings indicate a varying prevalence of sesamoid bones in the lower extremities, with specific attention to the feet. The presence of sesamoid bones was observed in a significant proportion of the study population, highlighting their importance in the anatomical structure of the lower extremities. Further analysis and interpretation of the data will provide insights into the prevalence rates of sesamoid bones, their distribution across different age groups and genders, and potential associations with lower extremity pathologies. ...
