The broad objective of the study is to examine the effect of self-accounting system on the performance of the public sector in Nigeria, using Federal Pay Office, Makurdi as the study area. Business Entity Assumptions (BEA) were adopted as the theoretical framework for the purpose of this study. The study adopted the survey design method and two methods of data collection which are the primary and the secondary method of data collection were used for collecting data. 25 respondents were sampled using simple random sampling technique and were administered with a structured questionnaire in order to collect data for analysis in this study. Data collected was analyzed using simple percentage method of data analysis. Findings from the study revealed that Federal Pay Office Makurdi operates self accounting system/unit and that the accounting system aids in the performance of Federal Pay Office Makurdi. The study recommends among others there should be room for corrections and proper internal regulation of effective management transactions.
