Abstract
This study aimed to examine the impact of the availability and adequacy of professional physics teachers for effective teaching and learning of physics in senior secondary schools in Nassarawa local government area, Kano state three research questions and three objectives were developed to guide the study, descriptive survey design was adopted in the study, 27 secondary schools with a population of 1,054 teachers were used as the population of the study, a sample of 60 teachers was drafted using Research Advisor (2006). The findings of the study revealed that physics teachers are available in most of the schools and have attained the Teachers Registration Council certificate in the study area, there is an inadequacy of professional physics teachers in most of the schools where they experience a lack of replacement after being transferred and the teacher–student ratio is not sufficient in the study area, the study, however, revealed that professional teachers have an impact on effective teaching and learning physics in secondary school in the study area. The study recommended that only physics teachers who have relevant qualifications and relevant teaching experiences should be recruited to teach in secondary schools, in-service training of physics teachers should be embarked upon periodically by government agencies and private school proprietors to improve the efficiency or effectiveness of teachers and there is need for the government and other educational bodies to provide necessary instructional materials available to physics teachers when needed for effective teaching and learning. ...
